World’s Fastest Marathons – April 2026 Rankings
Discover the best April 2026 marathons for sub-3 finishes. Our global rankings highlight fast courses and elite-level performances.
April 2026 may prove to be one of the most significant months in marathon history. It featured the first official sub-two-hour marathon ever recorded, multiple world-record performances, and exceptional depth across the global racing calendar. From the World Marathon Majors to smaller regional events, April delivered a remarkable concentration of high-quality performances at every level of the sport.
The defining moment came at the London Marathon, where Sabastian Sawe became the first man in history to break the two-hour barrier in a record-eligible race, winning in 1:59:30. The race also produced a women-only world record, making it one of the most memorable marathon days ever staged. Yet while London generated the month's biggest headlines, the broader marathon landscape was equally impressive, with races across North America, Europe and Australia producing outstanding sub-3 performances.
The Sub-3 rankings are designed to measure something different from elite achievement alone. Rather than focusing primarily on winning times, they reward races that combine a high concentration of sub-3 finishers with substantial overall participation. By that measure, Boston Marathon delivered one of the strongest performances ever recorded in our rankings, while events such as Ballarat Marathon and Eugene Marathon demonstrated how smaller races can compete with the world's largest marathons through exceptional field depth.
The 2026 rankings reflect the diversity of April's marathon calendar. Alongside globally recognised races such as Boston, London and Paris, several smaller events achieved outstanding results through a combination of strong participation and unusually high percentages of sub-3 finishers. Together, they make April one of the most competitive months of the year.
These rankings apply Sub-3's 45:45:10 formula - awarding 45% of the total score to the percentage of sub-3 finishers, 45% to the absolute number of sub-3 runners, and 10% to the fastest winning time. All results are verified from official 2026 race data. Every race here met our eligibility criteria and was evaluated on the same transparent basis.
🥇 Boston Marathon
Boston, United States - 20 April 2026
Boston tops the April rankings with an exceptional combination of scale and depth. A field of 29,037 finishers produced 5,850 sub-3 performances, representing 20.1 per cent of all runners. No other race in April combined such a large number of sub-3 finishers with such a high proportion of the field achieving the benchmark. The result highlights the unique strength of Boston's qualifying-based entry system, which continues to produce one of the deepest amateur marathon fields anywhere in the world.
