World’s Fastest Marathons – March 2026 Rankings
Discover the best March 2026 marathons for sub-3 finishes. Our global rankings highlight fast courses and elite-level performances
March is one of the deepest and most competitive months on the global marathon calendar. It sits at the heart of the northern hemisphere spring season, where large city marathons combine favourable conditions with peak participation. The result is a consistent concentration of high-quality amateur performances, supported by broad international fields and well-established races.
The 2026 rankings reflect that depth. Marató Barcelona leads the global standings, delivering one of the strongest combinations of field size and sub-3 performance seen this year. Tokyo Marathon remains a major presence, combining elite-level speed with one of the largest fields in the world, while races such as Shizuoka highlight the strength of the Japanese circuit. Across Europe, events like Bologna continue to feature prominently, reinforcing the consistency of the spring racing calendar at multiple levels.
Beyond the headline races, March also demonstrates the breadth of the global marathon landscape. Competitive performances emerge across a wide range of race sizes and course profiles, with smaller and mid-sized events contributing meaningfully to the overall depth of the rankings. The month rewards races that balance participation scale with a high concentration of sub-3 runners, rather than relying solely on front-end elite results.
These rankings apply Sub-3’s 45:45:10 formula — awarding 45% of the total score to the percentage of sub-3 finishers, 45% to the absolute number of sub-3 runners, and 10% to the fastest winning time. All results are verified from official 2026 race data. Every race here met our eligibility criteria and was evaluated on the same transparent basis.
