Atlanta Marathon
Explore the Atlanta Marathon profile – location, course details and sub-3 stats. Part of the Sub-3 World Marathon Rankings.
The Atlanta Marathon is a long-standing urban race organised by the Atlanta Track Club, held annually in late February or early March. Starting and finishing near Mercedes-Benz Stadium at The Home Depot Backyard, the race is built around a looped course that showcases central Atlanta and its surrounding neighbourhoods. It forms part of a broader race weekend that includes a half marathon, relay and 5K, and has developed a reputation as one of the city’s flagship running events.
The course is defined by its relentlessly hilly profile. Widely regarded as having very little flat running, it features continuous rolling terrain with total elevation gain in the region of 1,700–1,800 feet. Rather than a small number of major climbs, the difficulty comes from the cumulative effect of repeated ascents and descents across the full distance. The route passes a number of notable landmarks, including Centennial Olympic Park, Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, Piedmont Park and Grant Park, as well as several university campuses such as Georgia Tech and Morehouse. This creates a varied and visually engaging race, but one that places sustained demands on pacing and muscular endurance.
Conditions on race day are typically cool at the start, often around 49–53°F (9–12°C), but can change quickly. Temperatures may rise into the mid-teens Celsius, and humidity frequently exceeds 75–80%, increasing the physiological cost of the later miles. These shifts can make the second half of the race feel significantly harder, particularly when combined with the undulating terrain.
For sub-3 runners, the Atlanta Marathon presents a clear challenge. While it is a Boston Marathon qualifier and a World Marathon Major Age Group World Rankings qualifying race, the course profile makes even pacing difficult and fast times harder to achieve. It tends to suit runners who are well prepared for hills and capable of sustaining effort across variable terrain. Those seeking flat, controlled conditions may find it less predictable, while strength-focused runners may be better equipped to handle its demands.
