Lentemarathon Amstelveen

The Lentemarathon Amstelveen is a fast-growing spring marathon held annually in mid-March, just south of Amsterdam. Starting and finishing at the Stadshart in Amstelveen, the race combines an accessible urban base with a varied route that moves through parks, riverside paths and open countryside. Since its launch in 2017, it has expanded rapidly, now attracting large participation across multiple distances and establishing itself as a key early-season event in the Dutch running calendar.

The course is defined by its flat profile, typical of the Dutch landscape. With minimal elevation gain of around 38 metres, it offers consistently even terrain that supports steady pacing throughout. The route transitions between different environments, passing through the Amsterdamse Bos, the historic Oude Dorp area, stretches along the Amstel River, and sections of open polder landscape. Surfaces are primarily asphalt, with some segments on park paths and bike trails, but without significant disruption to rhythm. This combination of flat terrain and varied scenery makes it both runnable and visually engaging, without introducing major physical challenges.

Weather conditions in March are generally cool, with daytime temperatures around 10°C and colder mornings closer to 4°C. Wind is a common factor in the region, particularly in exposed polder sections, and light rain is possible. These elements can influence pacing, especially on open stretches, but overall conditions are typically within a range that supports endurance performance.

For sub-3 runners, the Lentemarathon Amstelveen offers a favourable setup. The flat course allows for controlled pacing and reduces the physiological cost associated with elevation changes. The main variables are environmental, particularly wind exposure, rather than terrain. Runners who can maintain consistent effort and manage pacing in potentially breezy conditions are well positioned to take advantage of the course. It is particularly suited to those targeting early-season times, where a combination of flat terrain and cool temperatures can support a measured, efficient run.
