Ethekwini Marathon
Explore the Ethekwini Marathon profile – location, course details and sub-3 stats. Part of the Sub-3 World Marathon Rankings.
The Ethekwini Best of the Best Marathon is a relatively recent addition to the South African road running calendar, first established in 2019 with its inaugural race held in 2020. Based in Durban and organised by the Ama-Ravens Athletics Club, it has quickly developed a reputation as a performance-focused event, attracting runners targeting qualifying standards for major races as well as those aiming for personal bests. The race starts and finishes at Kings Park Athletic Stadium, providing a central and structured setting for the event.
The course is designed to be fast and rhythmical, with a strong emphasis on flat running. It is run entirely on asphalt and features total elevation gain of approximately 259–292 metres, placing it among the flatter marathon routes in the region. The layout takes runners along the Durban Golden Mile, through the Florida Road precinct, and past the Durban Botanic Gardens, combining coastal exposure with urban sections. The profile allows for sustained pacing with minimal interruption from significant climbs, making it well suited to runners seeking consistency over the full distance.
Race conditions are shaped by Durban’s late summer climate. The marathon begins early, typically at 05:00, allowing runners to take advantage of cooler early morning temperatures. However, as the race progresses, conditions tend to become warmer and more humid, with daytime highs often reaching 26–28°C. Humidity is a consistent factor, and there is a possibility of light rain, reflecting the seasonal patterns of the region. These elements can increase the difficulty of the latter stages, particularly for runners aiming to maintain aggressive pacing.
For sub-3 runners, the Ethekwini Best of the Best Marathon offers a clear opportunity on paper. The flat, road-based course supports even pacing and sustained effort, creating conditions that are favourable for time-focused attempts. The primary constraint is environmental rather than structural, with heat and humidity requiring careful management. Runners who can control early effort and adapt to rising temperatures are likely to benefit most from the course’s design, while those less accustomed to humid conditions may find the second half more demanding.
