Fastest Winter Marathons in the World 2026
The Fastest Winter Marathons in the World 2026 ranking identifies the 20 fastest winter marathons, based on verified 2025 results and the Sub-3 rankings methodology.
Winter is a relatively small but increasingly important part of the global marathon calendar. While far fewer races take place between December and February than in spring or autumn, those that do are often located in climates that offer favourable racing conditions. Southern Europe, parts of the United States, the Middle East and North Africa host a number of events where cool temperatures and flat courses create strong environments for fast marathon running.
This combination of climate and timing means winter marathons frequently attract fields that are highly focused on performance. Rather than sheer scale, the defining characteristic of the season is the high proportion of experienced runners targeting fast times. In several cases, relatively modest fields generate unusually dense clusters of sub-3 performances.
The Valencia Marathon dominates the winter rankings and currently stands as the strongest marathon in the world for sub-3 performance. In 2025 the race produced 5,333 sub-3 finishers from 30,669 runners (17.4%), supported by a 2:02:23 winning time. No other marathon globally combines this level of participation with such an extraordinary density of fast amateur performances, which is why Valencia sits at the very top of the Sub-3 World Marathon Rankings.
Other races underline the strength of the winter schedule. The California International Marathon produced 1,423 sub-3 finishers (17.4%) from a field of 8,178 runners, reflecting its long-standing reputation as one of North America’s premier time-focused marathons. Meanwhile Seville Marathon continues to attract deep international fields, producing 1,655 sub-3 performances from 10,721 runners (15.4%).
Taken together, the winter rankings show how a relatively small number of races can still produce a substantial share of the year’s fastest marathon performances. With favourable climates and highly competitive fields, the season has become an important window for runners targeting the three-hour barrier.
