Fastest Marathons in the Nordic Countries – 2026 Edition
The definitive listing of the fastest road marathons in the Nordic countries for sub-3-hour runners, informed by the Sub-3 World Marathon Rankings 2026.
The Fastest Marathons in the Nordic Countries list brings together leading marathon performances from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, using the same underlying dataset as the Sub-3 World Marathon Rankings. The 2026 edition includes 10 qualifying marathons across the region - a relatively compact group, but one that spans a wide range of race types, from large capital-city events to smaller, more tightly focused races.
The Nordic region occupies a distinctive place in the sub-3 landscape. Cool spring conditions, long daylight hours and generally fast course profiles create a favourable backdrop for distance running, but outcomes vary sharply depending on scale and field composition. Some races attract thousands of runners with mixed motivations, while others draw smaller but more uniformly time-focused fields, leading to very different sub-3 dynamics.
That contrast is clear at the top of the rankings. Copenhagen Marathon sets the regional benchmark by combining major scale with strong sub-3 depth, producing 1,431 sub-3 finishers from 18,508 runners (7.73%) in 2025 alongside a 2:08:25 winning time. Elsewhere, races such as Uppsala Marathon achieve even higher sub-3 density (8.23% from 1,227 finishers), while larger events like Stockholm Marathon contribute substantial absolute numbers of sub-3 performances (598) despite a much lower proportion (3.17%). The result is a rankings table shaped as much by competitive intent as by size.
The Nordic list also reflects the region’s variety. Alongside the largest city marathons, smaller races such as the H.C. Andersen Marathon and Oslo Marathon show how mid-sized fields can still deliver meaningful sub-3 output when conditions and entrant profiles align. For sub-3 runners, the trade-offs are clear: scale brings volume, while concentration brings density, and the Nordic calendar offers examples of both within a relatively small set of races.
As with the global rankings, all data has been manually collected from official 2025 results, with no automated feeds or scraping tools used. The Nordic rankings apply the same scoring framework as the Sub-3 World Marathon Rankings, allowing meaningful comparison both within the region and against races elsewhere in the world.

🥈 Uppsala Marathon
Sweden
Uppsala earns its place near the top through density rather than size. In 2025 it recorded 101 sub-3 finishers from 1,227 total finishers (8.23%), alongside a 2:20:30 winning time. The high proportion of sub-3 runners suggests a field that skews strongly towards time-focused entrants relative to its overall scale.

🥉 H.C. Andersen Marathon
Denmark
H.C. Andersen places highly as a smaller race with credible sub-3 output. In 2025 it produced 119 sub-3 finishers from 2,290 total finishers (5.20%), alongside a 2:21:35 winning time. It sits in the sweet spot where field size is manageable but the sub-3 cohort is still large enough to create a genuine competitive layer.

4️⃣ Stockholm Marathon
Sweden
Stockholm’s ranking is driven primarily by volume. In 2025 it delivered 598 sub-3 finishers from 18,876 total finishers (3.17%), alongside a 2:11:34 winning time. The sub-3 proportion is lower than the more concentrated events above it, but the sheer number of sub-3 performances keeps Stockholm firmly in the Nordic top tier.

About These Rankings
These rankings present the Nordic section of the Sub-3 World Marathon Rankings, drawing on verified results from marathons held between January and December 2025. Each race is scored using Sub-3’s 45:45:10 model, which weights the proportion of sub-3 finishers, the total number of sub-3 performances, and the fastest winning time. Together, these measures allow for consistent comparison across events of very different sizes and profiles. You can read more about the methodology behind the global rankings on our Rankings Methodology page.
