The March 2026 edition of the Sub-3 World’s Fastest Marathons is now live. As the spring season gathers momentum in the northern hemisphere, March represents one of the deepest and most competitive points in the global calendar. Major city marathons, established European races and high-performing regional events combine to produce a broad and high-quality field of sub-3 performances.
At the top of the rankings, Marató Barcelona delivers another standout performance. A field of 31,774 produced 2,428 sub-3 runners (7.6%), underpinned by a fast, flat coastal course and favourable conditions that continue to attract serious amateurs in volume. A winning time of 2:04:56 confirms its strength at the front, but it is the balance of scale and depth that secures its position as the leading race of the month.
Tokyo Marathon follows closely, combining elite speed with one of the largest fields in global marathon running. The 2026 race saw 2,403 sub-3 performances from 37,196 finishers, alongside a 2:03:36 winning time — the fastest recorded in March. While the size of the field inevitably moderates the overall percentage, Tokyo remains one of the most consistent sources of high-volume sub-3 results anywhere in the calendar.
Shizuoka Marathon completes the podium with one of the most concentrated performances of the month. From 11,346 finishers, 993 runners broke three hours, producing an 8.8% sub-3 rate — the highest among the leading races. Its controlled course and competitive domestic field continue to make it a reliable benchmark for sub-elite performance in Japan.
Elsewhere in the top 10, a range of race profiles underline the diversity of March racing. Ethekwini Marathon stands out for its efficiency, generating 82 sub-3 runners (7.3%) from a compact field in warm coastal conditions. Bologna Marathon continues to deliver strong returns from a smaller European field, while Run Rome The Marathon contributes one of the largest sub-3 totals of the month, with 942 performances despite a more demanding course. At the other end of the scale, races such as Napa Valley and Mt Charleston highlight how smaller, performance-focused fields and favourable course profiles can sustain high concentrations of fast amateur results.
The Sub-3 World’s Fastest Marathons lists are based on verified finisher data, with emphasis placed on depth rather than reputation. Rankings balance the proportion of sub-3 finishers, the absolute number of sub-3s, and the fastest winning time. The methodology remains unchanged for 2026, ensuring direct comparability across months and with previous editions.
March’s table reflects the full spectrum of the global marathon calendar: major international events, efficient mid-sized races and smaller, high-performance fields all feature prominently. As always, the rankings reward sustained depth across the field rather than isolated elite outcomes.
This release forms part of the wider 2026 World’s Fastest Marathons programme, which will update monthly throughout the year ahead of the full annual Sub-3 World Marathon Rankings.
