The Verona Marathon is a fast, scenic 42.195 km race held annually in Verona, Italy, taking runners on a tour through one of Europe’s most historic and culturally rich cities. Verona is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its Roman and Renaissance landmarks, and the marathon route is designed to highlight these features, combining a flat, fast profile with exceptional urban scenery.
The race starts at Piazzale Olimpia, near the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi, and finishes in the heart of the city at Piazza Bra, next to the iconic Roman amphitheater. The course is certified and approved by World Athletics and AIMS, offering an ideal layout for runners seeking a personal best or a qualifying time. With an elevation gain of approximately 67 meters and a maximum altitude difference of only about 24 meters between its highest and lowest points, the route maintains a largely consistent rhythm throughout.
Runners follow sections of the Adige River and pass a sequence of Verona’s most significant monuments. Key sights include the Basilica of San Zeno, the Basilica of Sant’Anastasia, Piazza delle Erbe with its Torre dei Lamberti, Castelvecchio and the Scaliger Bridge, Porta Borsari, and Ponte Pietra. The course layout creates a blend of river views, historic squares, narrow medieval streets, and long straight stretches suited to fast running. As participants approach the finish in Piazza Bra, they run directly toward the Arena, providing one of the most striking marathon backdrops in Italy.
The event was first held in 2001 and is organized by GAAC 2007 Veronamarathon, a local athletics association with roots in the city’s running community. Over the years, the marathon has earned recognition for its scenic appeal, smooth organisation, and connection to Verona’s cultural identity. The event also features a half marathon and a shorter family run, making it accessible to a wide range of participants.
With a six-hour time limit for the full marathon, runners of various abilities can enjoy the course at a comfortable pace while taking in Verona’s architectural and historic richness. The Verona Marathon offers a combination of performance potential and cultural immersion in one of Italy’s most iconic cities.
