The Torino City Marathon is a fast, flat loop course that begins and ends in the historic Piazza Castello, offering runners a tour through the cultural, aristocratic and industrial heritage of Turin. Situated at the foot of the Western Alps and crossed by the River Po, Turin is the first capital of unified Italy and remains one of the country’s major cultural and economic centres. The marathon reflects this dual identity, blending grand baroque architecture with long, modern boulevards and views of the city’s industrial landmarks.

The current course is a 42.195 km loop with minimal elevation change, featuring roughly 250 metres of total ascent. It is widely regarded as one of the fastest marathon routes in Italy, designed to support personal-best attempts. The route departs Piazza Castello and runs through the heart of the city before extending into several surrounding municipalities, including Moncalieri, Nichelino, Beinasco and Orbassano. These sections are characterised by long, straight roads that allow runners to settle into a steady rhythm. The return to the city centre follows major avenues such as Corso Francia, creating a fast, predictable profile all the way back to the finish. The course is fully closed to traffic, and runners pass notable landmarks including royal Savoy residences, baroque squares, parks and the former Fiat Lingotto factory. In many editions the marathon coincides with the city’s “Luci d’Artista” winter light installations, adding an atmospheric backdrop to the race.

Marathon events in Turin have roots extending back to 1897, with the first official marathon held in 1919. The city has a long association with elite competition, hosting the marathon at the first European Athletics Championships in 1934. The modern iteration of the race began in 1991 as a point-to-point event known as the Susavigliana, running from Susa or Avigliana into Turin. In 1998 the organisers adopted the current loop format focused on the city and its immediate metropolitan area, establishing Piazza Castello as the permanent start and finish. The race moved from an April date to its current mid-to-late November timing in 2010. Today, the Torino City Marathon is FIDAL and AIMS certified and ranks among Italy’s top marathon events, attracting thousands of runners each year.
