The Rocket City Marathon is a long-established annual road race held in Huntsville, Alabama, typically staged on the second full weekend of December. Known for its fast, gently rolling profile and distinctive indoor finish, the race has become a popular late-season option for runners targeting personal bests or Boston Marathon qualification.

The event is centred in downtown Huntsville, with both the start and finish located at the Von Braun Center (VBC). The course is USATF-certified and runs primarily on city streets, forming a broad loop that showcases a wide cross-section of the city. While not completely flat, the elevation profile is best described as gently rolling, with long runnable sections broken up by a handful of short, manageable climbs. This balance has helped establish the race’s reputation as a consistently fast and fair course.

From the VBC, runners move through downtown Huntsville before heading into established residential areas such as Old Town and Blossomwood. The route passes Maple Hill Cemetery, one of Alabama’s oldest cemeteries, and continues through sections of the Medical District and Campus 805, a former industrial complex now redeveloped into a mixed-use area. A notable highlight is the stretch near the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, where runners pass close to displays associated with Huntsville’s spaceflight heritage, including views of the Saturn V rocket. The course also skirts the Huntsville Botanical Garden before looping back toward the city centre.

One of the marathon’s defining features is its finish. Instead of concluding outdoors, runners enter the Von Braun Center and finish indoors in the South Hall, a welcome sight in December conditions. This indoor finish allows for immediate access to post-race food, shelter, and stretching areas, adding a practical and memorable element to the race experience.

The Rocket City Marathon was first run in 1977 as the Joe Steele Rocket City Marathon, making it the oldest marathon in Alabama and the first in the state to use a certified course. It has been organised by the Huntsville Track Club for decades, with stewardship later involving the Huntsville Sports Commission. Over time, the event has expanded into a full race weekend, offering a marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K, and shorter fun runs.

With its combination of history, reliable organisation, and a fast but honest course, the Rocket City Marathon remains a respected fixture on the US winter marathon calendar.
