The Noosa Marathon is part of the Runaway series and takes place in one of Australia’s most popular coastal resort towns. Held in late May, the race offers a flat, multi-lap course through Noosa Heads and its surrounding waterways, with a laid-back atmosphere and sub-tropical scenery.

The marathon is made up of multiple out-and-back loops, largely following the river and passing through the town centre. The route is flat and paved throughout, with very few turns or technical sections—ideal for rhythm and pace control. The multi-lap format allows spectators to see runners several times and makes logistics easier for athletes and supporters alike.

Noosa’s climate in May is generally warm but manageable. Early morning temperatures are mild, with higher humidity than in southern Australia. The race starts early to reduce exposure to midday sun, and shade is limited, so hydration planning is important.

Support along the course is enthusiastic near the start/finish area and in the centre of town. Elsewhere, crowd presence is thinner but steady, aided by volunteers and fellow competitors on the looping design. Aid stations are well placed and professionally managed.

The sub-3 field at Noosa is respectable, with club runners from across Queensland and New South Wales frequently using it as a target race. The flat course gives it PB potential, although the loop format can be mentally demanding for some.

Noosa is a destination race—with clean air, beachside cafes and a relaxed vibe that contrasts with the intensity of urban marathons. For sub-3 runners who prefer a race that’s low-pressure, well-managed and set in a beautiful location, the Noosa Marathon is a compelling option.
