The Fastest Winter Marathons list ranks the leading races from December to February using the same underlying dataset as the Sub-3 World Marathon Rankings.

Winter may feature fewer races than other parts of the marathon calendar, but several events during this period consistently generate some of the strongest sub-3 performances of the entire year. At the centre of the winter rankings sits the Valencia Marathon, which in 2025 produced an extraordinary 5,333 sub-3 finishers from 30,669 runners (17.4%), alongside a 2:02:23 winning time. No other marathon in the world currently combines such scale with such a high concentration of sub-3 runners, which is why Valencia now sits at the very top of the global Sub-3 World Marathon Rankings.

Other races in the winter calendar reinforce how favourable climates can support fast marathon running at this time of year. The California International Marathon continues to attract large numbers of time-focused runners chasing personal bests and qualification standards, producing 1,423 sub-3 finishers in 2025. Meanwhile Maratón de Sevilla has established itself as one of Europe’s premier winter races, combining mild February temperatures with a flat course that consistently produces deep competitive fields.

The winter season also includes a mix of smaller races that produce unusually high sub-3 densities relative to their size. Events such as Maratona di Pisa and Ventura Marathon attract compact but highly performance-oriented fields, demonstrating how winter marathons can generate strong results even without the scale of the largest international races.

As with all Sub-3 rankings, the data has been manually compiled from official 2025 race results. No scraping tools or automated feeds have been used. The winter list therefore represents another seasonal view of the same verified dataset that underpins the global World Marathon Rankings and the wider Sub-3 project.

Each marathon is assessed using Sub-3’s 45:45:10 scoring model, which balances three factors: the proportion of sub-3 finishers, the total number of runners breaking three hours, and the fastest winning time. The aim is straightforward. A race’s reputation or scenery may attract attention, but the rankings focus on the factors that actually produce fast amateur marathon performances.

The Fastest Winter Marathons – 2026 edition now sits alongside the global World Marathon Rankings, monthly tables and individual marathon profiles as part of the wider Sub-3 Marathon Rankings project. Together, these resources offer runners a clearer way to evaluate races based on verified results rather than reputation alone.
